My paternal grandfather, Theodore Nathans, came to America from what is now Lithuania as a young man. He settled in Paterson, NJ, and married my grandmother, Bertha Siegel from Baltimore. In the 50s, he bought a glass and mirror shop on West Broadway in Paterson, which my dad, Jerome, aka Jerry, took over after Teddy passed away.
My dad expanded the business to include picture framing and eventually began offering fine art pieces. I have fond memories of attending the Village Art Show every Spring, where we would walk for blocks exploring artists’ booths. My mom, Rita Kitzis Nathans, originally from Bayonne, NJ, added an art gallery to our offerings when the shop was relocated to West Paterson in the 80s due to an urban renewal project in Paterson.
Over the years, we have amassed hundreds of art prints, many of which now sit in boxes in my basement in Brooklyn. The images here continue their story. Some pieces are framed; most are not. Some pieces show signs of wear, which are noticeable and/or mentioned. All are inexpensive, as they deserve to be displayed on walls rather than stored away, although framing could be costly.
